Activities

White Water Rafting
The Chattooga Wild & Scenic River begins at the base of Whitesides Mountain in North Carolina and flows in a southwesterly direction to form the border between South Carolina and Georgia.  One of the wildest and most beautiful whitewater rivers in the country, the Chattooga was the first river in the Southeast to be designated "Wild and Scenic" in 1974 by Congress and was used as a location for the movie Deliverance. Yeah, don't stop paddling if you hear banjos. The Sumter and Chattahoochee National Forests surround you while on this wilderness adventure river.

Section IV of the Chattooga, the section that you will raft for 7 hours, covers the steepest section of river currently being run on a commercial basis in the Southeast.  In a 1/4 mile gorge, the river drops more than 75 feet through the famed Five Falls: Entrance, Corkscrew, Crack-In-the-Rock, Jawbone, and Sock-Em Dog. Section IV can be the ultimate challenge for beginner and experienced whitewater paddlers, but don't worry there is a skilled guide in each raft, and saftey is the number one priority.

High Canopy Zip Lining
More than just a zipline, Chattooga Ridge Canopy tour takes you through multiple ecosystems and into grand old white oak and maple treetops. Take flight above the forest floor blanketed with mountain laurel, rhododendron, flam azalea, and other native plants. While in flight, watch for our hawks, deer, and other wildlife while rangers share the cultural history of the Long Creek Academy and the Chattooga River region.
Each participant is provided with the equipment to safely navigate the course, including full body harnesses, trolley, helmets, gloves, and tether lines. The tours also provide two Association Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) trained Canopy Rangers for each group to give insight on the wildlife and to guide you safely down the ziplines.
This zipline canopy experience gives you over 1/2 mile of air time with:
  • Ground school to learn how to safely zip line and practice these safety techniques on a practice zip
  • A hoist up to our Triceratops platform to provide an exhilarating start to the canopy tour
  • Four bridges
  • Ten ziplines between trees and elevated platforms
  • Four zips across the beautiful Academy Lake
  • Over nine scenic and historic acres of flying area with the Wildwater Chattooga property and Academy Lake.
On the zipline day we advice TAG members to wear t-shirts (not tank tops) and pants in order to have a more comfortable flight. Harness seats will wrap around your upper thigh, shoulders, and waist, so collared shirts and long pants will be more comfortable. Closed toed shoes are required for those that wish to enjoy the zipline experience. Long hair must be tied back and secured. TAG will be there to take lots of fun-filled adventure canopy photos, available to you for free after the trip.

Lodging in Yurts

Yurts are a bridge between past and future, first seen in the 12th centuries. To live in a yurt is to reconnect with our natural origins, and rekindle our potential for living simply. The smooth round walls and soft light create an easy elegance. The tall ceilings and artfully exposed rafters provide a unique airy living space with unlimited possibilities.
The group Yurts are a convenient place for you to stay when you visit the Chattooga during this adventure. Nestled on the edge of the woods, overlooking Academy Lake and steps away from the  Adventure Center, its the perfect location for TAG members to call home for four days. The yurts have bunkbeds with mattresses for sleeping, small tables & benches, ceiling fan, large outside decks with picnic tables, power, lights, and small heaters. No sheets, pillows, blankets or towels are provided so make sure you bring your sleeping bag, pillow, and blankets.

The Commons building has 6 individual bathrooms with private showers, toilet & sink as well as 2 additional toilets & sinks. The multi-purpose building will be the area which meals are cooked in and includes a full indoor kitchen that includes a refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, cooking utensils, pots & pans, and silverware.

You will enjoy meals and relaxation in a screened in dining room, an outside grill for BBQ meals, and fire pit with seating area area for smores and campfires each night.

TAG does its best to contribute to the environment's health by reducing the carbon footprint of traveling groups.  You see, traveling by charter coach is the most ecologically sound method of transportation available.  We will reduce road-way traffic by removing as many as 30 cars off the road, during this trip  The carbon footprint of a single diesel charter bus is significantly smaller than the many cars it would take to move the same number of people.  In fact a passenger on a charter bus uses 85% less fuel, than a passenger in a Hybrid car.  Plus, the carbon dioxide output is a whole lot less than a loaded jet-liner, the vehicles you'd have to rent or use, once you got to your destination, or even the train.  Especially, because we always use ultra-low sulfur content fuel, which helps keep our air cleaner. The coach uses the latest EPA 2010 clean diesel technology to reduce exhaust emissions including a Diesel Particulate Filter and Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
